Protect a brand’s IP in China : Manolo Blahnik wins a 22-year-long trademark battle in China

On July 19, 2022, the British luxury footwear brand, Manolo Blahnik finally won his 22-year legal battle in China to use its own name, demonstrating later higher support from local authorities in foreign brand IP infringement case.

Thanks to the fourth-edition amendment of China’s trademark law in 2019. China courts have been ready to act against bad-faith filings by rejecting all applications for trademark registrations that are not intended for use after facing a nearly disreputable problem of trademark squatting for decades in the market.

Vogue business report that China has massively transformed in the last 30 years by enhancing organizations’ brands and intellectual property protection which reflects a growing appreciation of the importance of IP in the country.
